Rubber Playground Safety Features Can Protect Your Children from Nasty Falls

As a parent, safety should be one of your biggest concerns about your children playing on your backyard playground equipment. All it takes is one slip or one careless error to send your child plummeting to the ground from at least ten feet in the air. If your child were to land on his or her head after that fall, there could be some serious medical repercussions down the road. It is for this reason that people all over the country are deciding to go with rubber playground safety options, like mats and mulch, to ensure that their children have a safe and enjoyable playground experience. For such a small price, you cannot beat the protective qualities of the rubber playground safety devices, as they are definitely a necessity for anyone who cares about their children.

Playground mats are one of the more popular rubber playground safety options. These mats come in a variety of shapes and sizes and you can purchase such mats in either giant squares which you can cut to shape later or as smaller tiles which piece together seamlessly. Either option costs roughly the same amount of money and both are certified to protect your children from falls of around ten feet. Unfortunately, while these rubber mats are certified for safety, they do suffer from a few design flaws. While they do guarantee great traction and are completely heat and cold resistant, such rubber mats are absolutely horrid during rainy seasons, as the water can remain on the rubber for days on end without proper drainage, causing an extreme loss of traction.

For around four dollars a square foot, you can purchase the next generation in rubber playground safety – rubber playground mulch. This mulch comes in pieces which are generally one half inch in size and are available in a huge number of different colors. Unlike the rubber mats, the rubber playground mulch has no traction loss during the rain, since its design allows it to be easily drainable. Six inches of the mulch is recommended for playgrounds which are ten feet high, so you should add more mulch if your playground is taller.
